Hardwood Floor Replacement – What Homeowners Need to Know

Hardwood floor brings a beautiful natural element into your home and goes with almost any decor. While it may require a bit more maintenance than other flooring materials, hardwood floors are well worth the investment in both time and money. Whether you choose classic woods like oak and walnut, eco-friendly bamboo or luxurious teak, each type of hardwood offers unique characteristics that can transform your living space.

One of the most common questions homeowners have is when to replace or refinish their existing hardwood floors. The truth is, it may be time to do so when you start to see visible damage. If the hardwood floor starts to show signs of wear and tear, or if you simply aren’t happy with how it looks in your home, it is probably time to make a change.

It is important to remember that the lifespan of hardwood floors depends on a number of factors, including environmental conditions, lifestyle compatibility and room suitability. It’s also vital to maintain consistent indoor humidity levels (30%-50%), as too little or too much humidity can affect the moisture content of the wood, causing it to expand and contract.

If you’re unsure how long your current hardwood floors will last, it is recommended to consult with an experienced Tampa floor replacement company. They can help you decide if it’s best to refinish your hardwood or install new flooring altogether.

Generally speaking, it’s best to hang onto extra planks of your hardwood during installation to use as a repair kit in the future. Using these planks to repair scratches and nicks is much easier than trying to match new wood to the finish of your existing hardwood. The trick is to sand out the scratch and nick from the bottom, working up from a coarse grit (80) to a very fine sanding pad (120). Using a soft-bristled broom or vacuum designed for hardwood will help prevent surface blemishes.

Another important consideration is the condition of your subfloor. Your subfloor is what supports your hardwood and is a key factor in its longevity. If you have existing hardwood, you will need to add 1/4″ luaun or thicker plywood underlayment to resolve flatness and gap issues and meet the requirements of whatever you are putting over it.

If your hardwoods have significant cupping or buckling, full replacement may be necessary. This is often due to excessive moisture damage or an uncontrolled humidity imbalance that can occur during seasonal transitions. It can also be caused by structural damage to the floor joists underneath the hardwood floors.

Taking steps to protect your hardwood floors and keep them looking their best can significantly increase the life of your flooring. Use a doormat at every entrance and place rugs in high traffic areas to protect your floors from dirt, dust and water damage. Sweep and vacuum frequently, and always mop with a dry microfiber mop. Clean up spills immediately, and consider using area rugs to limit direct sunlight exposure, which can fade the color of your hardwood. If you need a new high quality Tampa hardwood floor for your home upgrade make sure you look for a reputable licensed flooring company in Tampa.
